Cruz, a successful poet, is called home to his small New Mexico town when he learns his father, Senior, is dying of cancer. After years away, he begins to retreat into his troubled former life, and loses his poetic voice, his identity, and almost his life, before finding a way to heal his relationships with his family, his community, and himself.
